From Above

One of the great gifts God has given me is our little condo on the Nevada side of Heavenly Valley at Lake Tahoe. It’s a short hour and 45 minutes from home and a million miles away. I often sneak up to escape from whatever it is I need to flee.

It is a comfy little place but the greatest thing about it is the view of the Carson valley over 3000 feet below. Aside from the spectacular panorama, there is an awesome feeling of security being at 7650 feet, away from the hustle and bustle, in a place you can’t find unless you know where to look. Though the air is thin at this altitude, I seem to breathe much more easily here.

I’m reminded of a song written by a friend using the text from Psalm 31:

In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be ashamed;
In Your righteousness deliver me.
Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
Be to me a rock of strength,
A stronghold to save me.

I think we all need a place of refuge. There are times, perhaps more than we care to admit, that we need a hiding place. Life comes at us with a ferocity that catches us all off guard at one time or another. I’m glad I have access to this place, but knowing that I can seek refuge on the “Rock of Strength” that God provides anywhere, anytime, is an incomparable security blanket.

King David wrote the last verse of the 31st Psalm in the form of a command for good reason. Read it and do what it says; I’m trying my best to do the same:

Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who hope in the LORD.

Pressing on toward the goal . . .
